BC Transmission Corporation (BCTC), a provincial Crown corporation, is responsible for ensuring that British Columbians get the electricity they need - now - and in the future. We do so by transmitting power, produced at electricity generating facilities, and delivering it to communities throughout BC on our publicly-owned transmission system.
Our transmission system, largely built between 1940 and 1980, receives power from 60 generating facilities across the province and, through interconnections, from Alberta and the United States. In BC, the majority of our existing supply of electricity is produced at large hydroelectric generating stations owned and operated by BC Hydro. Large reservoirs and generating facilities located in the Peace and Columbia regions of the province provide over 70 per cent of the existing supply. Additional generation is produced by FortisBC and smaller independent power producers (IPPs) across the province.
After electricity has been generated, the transmission system delivers electricity to customers through what is generally known as the “electricity highway.” This highway is made up of high-voltage lines that take electricity from generation facilities to local substations, where it is reduced to lower-voltage electricity. From there, lower-voltage lines distribute the power to homes and businesses. Most of our province's electricity supply comes from facilities in the Interior of BC, while 70 to 80 per cent of demand for electricity is in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
BCTC is planning for the future. We are committed to ensuring that British Columbia's transmission technology and infrastructure remains at the leading edge and has the capacity to deliver power efficiently and reliably to meet growing demand.
