Policy guidance for BCTC's planning is provided by the provincial Energy Plan: A Vision for Clean Energy Leadership. Flowing from this policy vision, BCTC's planning priority is to ensure that there is adequate transmission in place to meet demand and enable the development of clean and renewable energy.

To make this vision a reality, BCTC's comprehensive capital planning process is in place to identify the transmission investments required to meet the needs of customers and ensure a robust, reliable transmission network is in place. 

BCTC’s planning processes include:

Transmission 2040: In 2008, BCTC began work on a long-term vision for the transmission system, known as BC Transmission 2040.  Transmission 2040 will incorporate the outcomes of the Long-Term Electricity Transmission Inquiry being led by the BC Utilities Commission, information on incorporating new technologies (Technology Roadmap) and a plan for maintaining the long-term value of the existing transmission system.  

Ten-Year Capital Plan: Central to BCTC's planning process is development of a ten-year Capital Plan. BCTC's current F2010 Ten-Year Capital Plan details capital investments beginning in the next two years and provides an outlook of potential investments for the next ten years.
